Investment Calculator

Use this to see what regular investing could add up to. The return is an assumption, not a promise: try a cautious figure and an optimistic one to see the range.

How it's calculated

The yearly return is turned into an equivalent rate for each contribution period, so 7% a year works out to about 0.565% a month. Each period the balance grows by that rate and the contribution is added.

Investment growth is the ending balance minus everything you put in.

FV = S × (1 + i)^n + C × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i

How to do it in Excel

=FV((1+7%)^(1/12)-1, 20*12, -500, -5000)
Ending balance with contributions at the end of each month.
=FV((1+7%)^(1/12)-1, 20*12, -500, -5000, 1)
The same, with contributions at the start of each month.
