Random Group Generator

Paste names one per line, or separated by commas. Choose how to split them and press the button. Press it again for a new shuffle.

Your result will appear here.

How it's calculated

The names are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle, which gives every order the same chance, then dealt into groups one at a time like cards. Group sizes never differ by more than one.

How to do it in Excel

With names in A2:A13, this spills a shuffled copy of the list in Excel 365:

=SORTBY(A2:A13, RANDARRAY(ROWS(A2:A13)))
Shuffled names. It reshuffles every time the sheet recalculates.
=MOD(SEQUENCE(ROWS(A2:A13))-1, 3)+1
Group numbers 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3… to put next to the shuffled list.
